Awhile back I wrote about the two four foot SFG boxes we built for our back yard. Well, it looks like Spring has finally sprung for real now and I thought I would give you an update on how that project is going.
The cats decided what we built for them were nice big litter boxes so obviously that wasn’t going to be acceptable. So we covered the tops of the boxes with pieces of lattices we had in the backyard until we were able to build these nice covered wagon style tops with PVC and netting.
I’m not entirely sure the netting will prevent a really determined cat or squirrel from getting in but I guess we’ll see how it goes. In my efforts to keep the critters out I didn’t want to go overboard and make it too difficult for myself to get in there and work on the plants.
Right now I have some dragon carrots and radishes going in a couple of the squares in the boxes and the half barrels by the fence have tomatoes and jalapenos.
We had a pretty productive weekend working with these, transplanting the strawberries, raspberries and blueberries as well as getting some flowers for a splash of color here and there.
I hope these half barrels provide enough root space for the patio variety tomatoes I picked up. I’m thinking they should be fine but time will tell.
The arrow bamboo went nuts last year and I have a pretty good grove of it going now. Hey Bubbles! Did ya say you liked that bamboo arrows post I linked to over in our forum? I might be able to provide some raw materials! In any event, this stuff makes great plant posts, screening and other useful things so I’m pretty happy with it. I hear the shoots are pretty fair eating too but haven’t tried them yet.
